Vincent Rogers was the son of the famous Commander Jack Rogers of the USS Monitor. Jack often carried his wife and son with him on peaceful missions. On one mission, however, the ship was raided by an unknown band of warriors and taken hostage. Jack's wife was killed in the hijacking, and he himself was badly injured, but it did not stop him from pulling off one of the most daring escapes in Federation history.
After the hijacking, Jack was given an untimely discharge. Jack fell into alcoholism, which lead to him abusing his son, Vincent.
When old enough to leave the home, Vincent enrolled into Starfleet Academy, where he found that he did not fit in well with others. Whenever he did well in a subject, he was always compared to his father, which lead to fits of rage that were very detrimental to the cadet. It was also learned that Vincent was a bit of a prankster, with some of his jokes going too far in the eyes of his fellow cadets and instructors.
If there was one thing Vincent gained from his experience in Starfleet Academy, it was a love of computers. He became quickly adept to programming ships' computers and even holodeck programs. Sometimes, however, this mixed with his sense of humor with some fairly dangerous side effects. For instance, during a phasor training program, it was found that Vincent had tampered with the safety mechanisms, causing several cadets to be injured.
As a Starfleet engineer, Vincent's career had its ups and downs. He was promoted to Lieutenant (jg) and awarded a medal of bravery after saving his ship, the USS Atlantic, from a Marquis attack. At the awards ceremony, however, he struck the officer presenting him with the award, which led to his rank and medal being stripped from him.
Aboard the USS Columbia, Vincent managed to save his ship containing Klingon ambassadors from a Marquis raid, pulling off a similar maneuver to the one his father had done on the Monitor.
When it was found later that Vincent had done this by stripping the computer controls away from the commander, he was denied a promotion.
There was a brief time when Vincent's career that is shrouded in mystery. His only clues being that he was able to speak perfect cardassian afterwards.
On his last mission prior to joining the crew of the USS Grail, Vincent's ship had drifted well into Romulan space. The computers aboard the ship showed them to be well within Federation Space, but the Romulans showed them to be 15 parsecs within Romulan territory. After the incident was cleared up, it was later found that Vincent had tampered with the navigational program. He was court marshaled for endangering the lives of his fellow crewman, and after much discussion, he either had to face penal colony camp or accept a drop in rank down to Yeoman, 1st class and join the USS Grail. Since he is not in a penal colony, it is obvious the choice he made.
Special Notes:
Along with his transfer to the USS Grail, he was given orders that he was not to use any computers other than a food replicator. To insure this, orders were sent to have the computers coded in such a way that he could have no access to them, not even the library or the holodeck.
